Recycling in Sausalito

In 2012, AB-818 was signed into law to help apartment dwellers with their recycling duties. California apartment owners are now required to provide common recycling options for their tenants in multi-family housing units. In Sausalito, this simply means that each landlord is required to supply our normal garbage collection services.

Recycling in Sausalito:

The City of Sausalito offers curbside recycling services on the same day that garbage is collected. Residents can place a container of glass, cans, paper, plastics and cardboard, mixed together, beside the front curb for pickup; however, this system does have a catch. The container that is used for recycling materials will be left on the curbside and not recycled. It is important to monitor your weekly collection point for used containers.

Garbage can pickup and recycling pickups can be located in different parts of your yard. If trash is normally collected from the alley, recycling still takes place on the front curb of the property. Recycling materials are limited to clean glass, metals, paper, plastics and cardboards; hazardous waste, electronics, grocery bags, packing peanuts and other items are not recycled through residential trash collection services or in the household trashcan.

Disposal of Usable Items: Whenever household items need to be recycled, it is always best to offer these usable items to people who can use them. Thrift store recycling bins are located behind ‘Scott of Sausalito’ on Bridgeway at Colma. The Sausalito thrift store receptacles do not accept electronics, televisions or extra-large household items. Other disposal options include renting a booth at the bi-annual Sausalito City Yard Sale.

Car Seats: Whenever unwanted car seats are in good condition, the California Highway Patrol is interested in accepting these items for redistribution. Contact their offices during normal business hours on the telephone line that is not for emergencies.

Used Carpets: The Marin County Humane Society will happily accept your used carpets to benefit the animals in their care. Information: (415) 883-4621.

Disposal of Packing Peanuts: Packing peanuts and Styrofoam are a necessary annoyance in our society. These items are not welcome at the landfill, even when made from green recyclable materials or food products. The eco-friendly packing materials are too hard to tell apart from the Styrofoam varieties at the recycling facilities. Clean boxing materials are accepted for recycling at our local Sausalito mailing stores during normal business hours. Ship ‘n’ Pack at: 1001 Bridgeway and, UPS Store at: 1007 Bridgeway.

Yard Waste & Lumber: The City of Sausalito picks up yard waste and non-treated lumber two times each month. Residents can have their yard waste and lumber scraps composted through leaving these piles for your trash collector during the weeks that contain the first and third Monday of each month. Piles must be left in paper bags that can be composted, or on tarps in small piles that are easy for workers to handle.

Batteries: Used household batteries and automobile or boat batteries of all types can be deposited in the blue collection container near the outside door of the Sausalito Public Library. Batteries should not be placed into a household trash can for disposal.

Florescent Lights: Waterstreet Hardware in Sausalito will accept non-car batteries and used florescent lights of all kinds for recycling. (415) 332-4318.

Electronics: Computers, electronic toys, monitors, televisions and telephones are hard items to dispose of due to the elements that contain toxic waste inside of these items. Renew Computers in San Rafael, California, will accept almost all types of computers and computer gear for recycling during normal business hours. Other items can be taken to the Toxic Waste Facility that is nearby to the dump grounds in San Rafael, California.

All toxic waste is accepted at this facility: film developing chemicals, used motor oil and paint are welcome. Closed Sunday and Monday – Information: (415) 485-5646.

Plastic Grocery Bags: Plastic grocery bags do not recycle well, and tend to get caught in recycling machinery. Take the plastic bags back to stores or offer them to your favorite thrift store facility. Or, check with the Senior Center and crafters to see if any local people are collecting these bags for crochet, gardening or sculptured craft projects.
